Brief Introduction to CUFE

In 1949, shortly after the foundation of the People's Republic ofChina, the Central University of Finance and Economics (hereafter CUFE) was establishedin Beijing. It is the first university in China funded by the government thatis specializing in finance and economics. The predecessor of CUFE was the CentralSchool of Taxation. In the next few decades, it went through several stages ofdevelopment, from the Central Institute of Finance, the Central Institute ofFinance and Economics, to the Central Institute of Finance and Banking. In1996, the institute was officially named as the Central University of Financeand Economics, under the direct leadership of the Ministry of Education.

CUFE isregarded as the best university infinance,economics, business and management of China, which is known as "theCradle of Giants in the Fields of Finance and Management". It is anational key university with subjects in economics, management, law,literature, philosophy, science et.al. In the newest assessments by theMinistry of Education ofthe People's Republic of China(2017), the Applied Economics of CUFE is ranked as No. 1 inChina, accompanying with thePeking Universityand theRenmin University of China. InThe Report of Chinese Universities and Courses evaluation of 2017-2018(released by Research Center For China Science Evaluation), CUFE wasranked No.1 among 67 finance and economics universities in mainland China. Becauseof its excellent academic reputation, the Applied Economics of CUFE is selectedinto the “Double First Class Disciplines Initiative”[1], which makes the university receive extra support from theMinistry of Education, the Ministry of Finance and the Beijing Government.

CUFE consists of 30 schools, departments and research centers. Theuniversity has the right to award bachelor's degrees in 50 academicdisciplines, master's degrees in 76 disciplines, and 31 doctoral degrees in AppliedEconomics. There are also five post-doctoral programs including Applied Economics,Theoretical Economics, Business Administration, Marx Theory and Statistics. Theuniversity has more than 1700 full-time faculties and staffs, including 283professors and 441 associate professors. There are 14,965 full-time students,including 10,060 undergraduates and 4,013 graduate students, 655 Ph.D. studentsand 237 international students.

CUFE is increasinglyopening the door to peer institutions in other countries. It considersinternationalization to be one of the most significant aspects of itsdevelopment strategy, and has established collaborations with more than 120universities and international organizations, like Harvard University, OxfordUniversity, Yale University among others. Since 2006, CUFE has offeredprofessional training services to more than 300 government officials from 77developing countries. CUFE is also one of the first universities being able to offergovernment-sponsored scholarships to students willing to study abroad. In 2005,CUFE was accredited by the Ministry of Education to offer internationalscholarships to support foreign students studying in China.

Brief Introduction to School of Economics

Departmentof Economics was founded on July 5, 1984, and became school of economics on May29th, 2000, which was one of the first schools at CUFE. Prior to this, ChenDaisun, Liu Guangdi, Sun Kaiyong and other famous economists made greatcontributions to CUFE and laid a solid foundation for the School of Economics. Underthe leadership of Hou Ronghua, Jin Zhesong and Zhao Lifen, Huang Shaoan, YangYunjie,(former deans) and Dean Li Tao (current dean), it has been developing rapidlyduring the past years. The School of Economics offers both aconcentrationin economics for undergraduate students andthedoctoral programfor graduate students.We now have71faculty members and 12 staff, including 27 professors, 27 associate professorsand 18 assistant professors. They teach and do research in the areas ofMacroeconomics, Microeconomics, Econometrics, International Economics,Industrial Economics,Political Economy, Economic History,Urban Economics, and Labor economics.

The School ofEconomics aims to the excellence in both research and teaching for the purposeof advancing knowledge and practical policy advising. On the heels of China'sstrong economic performance over the last decades, the Chinese economy has beendrawing the global attention from the perspective of economic research. We arecommitted to combining China roots with the modern economic tools to enhanceour understanding in the Chinese economy, and further hope to contribute to itsdevelopment as well as tomake a global impact.

All the faculty members holdthe Ph.D. degree from prestigious universities in the world, like PekingUniversity, Renmin University of China, Tsinghua University, The ChineseUniversity of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology,Boston College, Boston University, Texas A&M University, University ofMaryland, among others. The international education backgrounds of facultymembers make our School a diversified, open minded department. Our facultymembers have been extensively involved in international academic activities.Their research works were presented at important domestic and internationalconferences, like American Economic Association Annual Meeting, EconometricSociety Meetings, NBER, etc. In addition to academic activities, the School ofEconomics has also actively pursued applied research in areas relevant to thegovernment sector and policy advising. For example, faculty members collaboratewith China Development Bank, the Ministry of Finance of theGovernment of the People's Republic of China, the Ministry of Agriculture ofthe Government of the People's Republic of China, World Bank, the HooverInstitution and other institutes.

The School of Economicstoday is ranked among the top institutions in China for teaching and researchin the study of economics. Our faculty members have published papers intop Chinese academic journals, like Social Sciences in China,EconomicResearch Journal among others, and also decent English academic journals, likeJournal of Comparative Economics, Journal of Development Economics, ManagementScience. Meanwhile, in the past five years, the School of Economics hasundertaken 80 research projects funded by National Nature Science Foundation ofChina, National Social Science Foundation of China, and other government andcorporate sectors.

The School of Economics hasbeen placing great importance on collaborating with universities and institutionsaround the world. We have established many joint training programs withprestigious universities, like Cornell University, Okayama University, KangwonNational University. We are also engaged in many “student exchange programs"with the University of British Columbia, University of Cambridge, University ofMichigan and other universities.


[1]DoubleFirst Class Disciplines Initiative of China (Chinese:“双一流”学科): On 24 January 2017, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry ofFinance and the National Development and Reform Commission of the People'sRepublic of China released a document called“Implementation measures to coordinatedevelopment of World-class Universities and First-class DisciplinesConstruction”, named as “Double First Class Initiative”. Thisplan aims to create world classuniversitiesanddisciplines by the end of 2050, and it replaces the “Project 211” and “985 Innovative Platforms for KeyDisciplines Project”. CUFE was also selected into boththe “Project 211”and “985 Innovative Platforms for KeyDisciplines Project”.
